Facelift (Rhytidectomy) Procedure

When we age our skin loses elasticity, wrinkles develop and facial tissues lose youthful fullness and start to sag. As early as when we are in our 30’s, the effects of gravity, sun exposure and the stresses of daily life can be seen in our faces. Deep creases appear beside the mouth, the jawline slackens and becomes jowly and the neck develops folds and fat deposits. A facelift counteracts these signs of aging by tightening muscle, removing fat and trimming excess skin, giving the face and neck a fresher, younger feel.

Years ago, when facelifts first gained popularity, facial plastic surgeons utilized methods that often left the face looking too tight with flattened cheeks and a “wind tunnel” appearance. With today’s methodology, a person will not end up with an “operated look”. Our approach and honed surgical technique yield a very natural appearing result. While it would be nice, a facelift will not stop the clock and the face will still age over time. Some patients elect to repeat the procedure 7 to 10 years down the road, but the effects will continue look better than to not have the surgery in the first place. One will always look better than the chronological age.

Who is a candidate for a facelift?

The best candidate for a rhytidectomy (facelift) is a man or woman whose face has begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity. It is also beneficial if the person has a strong and well-defined bone structure. A non-smoker is a plus and of course, one needs to have good overall health. It is important to have realistic expectations and to be considering a facelift for personal reasons as opposed to being pressured into it by someone else.
