Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation
The visible signs of aging occur over time as a result of sun exposure, years of muscle movement (e.g. smiling, squinting, smoking), heredity and life style. The skin becomes more susceptible to wrinkles and sagging and the face loses its youthful fullness. Fortunately, there are innovative cosmetic non-surgical treatments to restore facial contours and reduce the appearance of lines and creases.
There are two main types of non-surgical, injectable products that Dr. Lieberman uses for facial rejuvenation: the neuromodulators and the dermal fillers. Neuromodulators, such as Botox are used to treat dynamic facial wrinkles by paralyzing specific muscles to relax the creases that have formed. Dermal fillers, such Radiesse replace 3 dimensional volume that has been lost from the soft tissue and skin of the face. There are many types of injectable products with different indications for use, characteristics and duration of enhancement. Dr. Lieberman will determine which will provide the most optimal and long lasting result. Some are better for fine lines, others work better with deep creases, and there are those that are more effective for increasing volume. In general, rejuvenating injectables can be used to:
- Soften facial creases (e.g. the line from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth, furrows in the forehead, crow’s feet)
- Improve the appearance of recessed scars
- Enhance shallow contours (e.g. along the temple area, hollow cheeks)
- Plump thin lips
- Replace lost ear lobe fullness
Types of rejuvenating injectables
No matter which type of injectable treatment you have, it is planned and given by Dr. Lieberman personally. As a facial plastic surgeon, he has extensive experience in not only the aesthetics of the face, but in the underlying structure of the face. This is critical because if an injection has been administered incorrectly, a person can suffer from a temporarily impaired facial function (e.g. lopsided smile, drooping brow).
Botox is a sterile, purified protein produced from the neurotoxin bacteria, Clostridium botulinum. When injected, it blocks nerve impulses to the superficial muscles directly below the skin and reduces the muscle activity that causes wrinkles of the face. After treatment, the muscles relax and the overlying skin becomes smooth and unwrinkled. It is very effective in treating crow’s feet, laugh lines, forehead creases, brow furrows, etc. with a duration of up to about 6 months.
Radiesse is a calcium-based, natural biological substance that we already have in our bodies and is therefore completely safe. Wrinkles, age lines and loss of skin elasticity are caused by a breakdown in the body’s natural collagen. As a volumizing filler, Radiesse immediately provides the desired fullness and lift upon injection. What is unique about Radiesse is that it acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure and stimulating the body’s natural collagen to grow as the filler is harmlessly absorbed into the body. Radiesse is a long-lasting filler with a duration of 12-18 months. It is used in areas where a thicker, firmer filler is needed, such the nasolabial folds (parenthesis lines from the nose to the mouth) or the marionette lines (creases along side the mouth). It is also good for treating filling scars and facial hollows.
Juvederm and Belotero are hyaluronic acids that are also naturally occurring substances found in our bodies. Because this gel like substance is soft to the touch, it is used for plumping thin lips, vertical lip lines, volumizing ear lobes and filling fine, surface wrinkles. With an immediate effect, the results last approximately 6 - 9 months. It works by binding and absorbing water molecules beneath the dermis and the skin, gently and naturally replacing lost volume.
Sculptra is a facial injectable that gives subtle results over time. This product is a synthetic polymer that has long been used in dissolvable suture material. It works in a different manner than other fillers in that it stimulates the body to generate new collagen to replace what has been lost due to aging. It is intended for rejuvenating the cheek hollows or temple areas with results lasting a few years to being permanent. The treatment requires an average of 3 injection sessions over a few months to achieve the desired natural appearing correction. It is contraindicated to inject it around the eyes or in the lips.
Fat can be harvested from the patient’s own body, such as the abdomen, thighs or buttocks and is re-injected most commonly into the lips. Some over-correction is done at the time of the treatment as there will not be a 100% survival of the harvested fat cells. The treatment results are somewhat variable as the fat can remain in place for an extended period of time or it may even be permanent.
Wish you had longer and fuller eyelashes?
Latisse is a revolutionary prescription treatment to promote the growth of eyelashes that are longer, fuller and darker. Latisse is applied each evening to the base of the upper eyelashes with initial results appearing as soon as 8 weeks. By 12 - 16 weeks, the lashes will have reached their full length and thickness. The eyelash improvements will remain as long as there is continued use of the medication. If the treatment is stopped, the eyelashes will eventually return to their original appearance.
The eyelash growth effect was discovered during clinical trials for a glaucoma medication called Lumigan. Researchers noticed that patients were exhibiting longer and fuller lashes. Allergan, Inc. isolated the component responsible and introduced Latisse as a prescription enhancement product.
